Congratulations to the following artists, chosen as artists-in-residence for 2004: Hilda Shen, Ann Rosenthal, Lisa Takata, Claudia Comay, Collin Murphy, and Birgit Rathsman.
The Artists-in-Residence Program is a program of Yosemite Renaissance, Inc. which provides lodging in the Yosemite area for up to one month for established artists. Applications for the 2005 Artists-in-Residence Program must be received by September 3, 2004.
For the year 2005, two-six participants will be selected for the artists-in-residence program. Accomplished visual artists in all media will be considered. They will be chosen from among artists referred by other artists, critics and curators and/or from portfolios and resumes submitted by the artists themselves. In order to qualify an artist should have an established reputation within the visual art community. Amateur artists and artists who do not have an established reputation will generally not be considered for the program.
Artists who wish to be considered for the AIR program should send a resume (including lists of exhibitions, collections and publications) and 10-40 slides (loaded in slide pages; please make sure your name is on all slides) or JEGS (no greater than 72 dpi, please) of recent work (on any subjects or themes) and other support documents to:
Yosemite Renaissance
To ensure proper return of submitted materials, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope of sufficient size to return all materials. Although we will attempt to return submissions as quickly as possible, they will not be returned until about ten weeks after the submission deadline for the year 2005 Residencies (Deadline: September 3, 2004).
Submissions will be evaluated by selected by a committee consisting of the Board of Directors of Yosemite Renaissance, the Director of Yosemite Renaissance, and consulting professional artists (when available).
The program provides free housing for up to one month (often broken up into two two-week stays) in Yosemite National Park or directly adjacent to it. Typically the housing will be provided in Yosemite West or Mariposa, and may vary from efficiency apartments to three bedroom houses. The program does not provide either food or transportation. Smoking and pets are not permitted in any of the housing units. Residencies will be scheduled year-round, and families and guests (with some limitations) are welcome.
Artists-in-residence are not asked to teach during their residencies. They may spend their time as they see fit: exploring, studying, experimenting, hopefully enjoying, and working in their chosen media. Visiting artists are subject to the same Park Service rules as all visitors--permanent alterations or manipulations of the landscape are strictly prohibited and even temporary alterations or manipulations may be severely restricted.
An average of five or six pieces (more or less, depending on size and medium) produced as a result of the residency will be exhibited within the following one to two years. Artists will provide one work which has resulted from their residency to be considered for donation to the permanent collection of the National Park Service's Yosemite Museum. This piece will be chosen in consultation between the artist, the Board of Directors of Yosemite Renaissance and the Museum's Chief Curator. Artists will also provide slides of all works created as a result of their residency for the Art of Yosemite Slide Registry.
